sundeck strut mount repair

the mounts for my struts have dug in to the sundeck while pulling out the screws. i'm thinking if I cut out a peice that's about 6"X6" or so and screw it over that area, i'd have a pretty strong place to remount the mount and screws.

my question is: what material do I use? Can I use that Seaboard stuff? (it's nice and pretty, but is it strong enough?) that sundeck seems to weigh a ton!

thanks in advance for the help

Re: sundeck strut mount repair

If I'm understanding correctly, I question the integrity of the material that makes up your sundeck? Is it wood? If the screws are pulling out (struts are dug into sundeck?) then the underlying wood is rotting so whatever you screw into the wood will also pull out over time from rot. The starboard material looks to be rated at 787 lbs for screw holding strength compared to a #10 wood screw penetrating plywood 1/2" deep at 500 lbs so from what I've read online the starboard material is strong enough. Again though, its only as strong as the material you are screwing the starboard into.

I also have a similar situation where my sundeck wood is in generally good shape but the screws pulled out where the struts connect. The wood is dry rotted just in these locations, so I'm replacing the whole thing and will make sure to seal the screw holes with 4200 when I install the new strut and hinge screws.

Re: sundeck strut mount repair

I’m assuming it is wood. But the only reason that area seems to be compromised is that rain accumulates right were the mount is. The rest seems to be in solid shape. While I agree that the sundeck would be better if I replaced the whole thing, why stop there? I’ll just get a new boat!

I’m thinking that strengthening up that area, for now, should hold me over for several more years.

@Further thanks for the input on the use of that material. The other benefit is that I can get a smaller piece of seaboard instead of having to buy a huge sheet of plywood.

Sorry, boat’s laid up and I can’t get pictures (I might have one on my phone, now that I think about it).

Ayuh,.... While yer plan oughta work Ok,...

Just be careful that yer repair piece doesn't shorten the distance 'tween the 2 points in a way that total Closure can't happen,....

If yer actuator is at full closed, 'n ya add 1/2", it won't close squarely anymore,...
