Sunk My Boat

Me and my buddy richard were trying to pull my boat over our bulkhead using a winch and a ramp I made. Well we couldn't ge it up so we tryed pushing it back down the ramp. The transom went completely under and the boat filled up with water. We spent two hrs bailing in knee deep water. We eventually got it bailed out. I felt pretty stupind for sure.

Just went and tested my brand new battery which was in the boat it's toast. I was pulling the boat out to put my new Mercury on it. I was trying to avoid towing it to the ramp with our cruiser. So ifigured why not pull it over the bulk head. I guess it turned out to be bad idea. But it was low tide at the time. It may have been eaiser at high tide . I could have also tryed pullng it up stern first.

Yep you done a good one there. I can't say to much though, I nearly sunk mine when I forgot to turn the live well fill pump off and I don't have an overflow. The rub rails were starting to touch the water on the stern side and I had to play with the bilge to get it to prime so it would pump. I'm a little confused still on how you done that but like the other guy said at least your powerhead didn't go under. Does that boat have foam? I wouldn't think it does because it looks to be an older boat.

I have sunk 2 boats. The first one i was preparing to sell. It was a 10 footer john boat with a 9.9 hp Yamaha enduro. I repainted everytihg including the motor. Then in my haste to get it all together I did not tight the motor properly to the transom. There I got to test the darn thing and at wot I lost control and end up in the middle of the channel (I lived in the wetlands in PR back then. brackish water) and the boat floating bow up. I was able to get everything out of the water and ran the motor agin but eventually the powerhead locked after about 3 weeks of non use.
Second boat, I was taking the boat out of the lake in a very inclined ramp that I was unfamiliar with. It appears that I did not pull the trailer deep enough. As I am winching the boat in trailer ( facing away from the boat) I could hear the bilge pump kick in. When I look to the boat, to my horror, the transom is under water and only the last 2 inches of the powerhead were out of the water! There was nothing else to do than to finish winching. Remembering the previous run in with water in the powerhead I took the motor plugs and carbs out. Sprayed with mix inside of the powerhead. Cleaned the carbs and plugs then tried to start it. It started for a couple of seconds then died. It got hydralocked, I pulled the plugs and keep cranking it that way to make sure it was all lubricated. I had to take the distributor off too and after 2 days it was working like a champ. I continued starting it every day and let it run a few minutes for a couple of weeks. Almost a year after and never had a problem with the powerhead.

Update. I decided to take the engine pff while the boat was on the lift. That 35 hp wasn't as heavy as I expected it to be I lifted it off and put it in the boat. I then lowered the boat in the water and and took the chrysler out. I my Merc on the transom and I was off. so far so good boat dosen't leak and it rides quite well.

I am not laughing, but I am smiling, not because of your bad luck, but because it looks like something I would have tried. Probably with similar results.

I launched our project boat yesterday, over a flood wall on the river promenade in the middle of the city. No other choice was available to us. We had about 100 people, and the Police (in and out of the water) in the audience. It worked, but not without small injuries to us, the boat, and our egos!

Never again. Stopped on the way home and spoke to a “Rowing Club” about renting some space from them.

We didn't take any photos, because by the time we were finished, all we wanted to do was get the heck out of there.

Glad to hear it all turned out OK in the end.
