I once went to the beach and found a spot to fish and cast out my line and set the rod in the holder anchored in the sand,A few minutes later some people walking in the surf dont see me fishing and walk into my line. Question is do the beach walkers have the right to think the edge of the surf is just like one very very long sidewalk or should they walk around the fishermen?

So you don't have a tongue in your head and you couldn't warn them about your line before they walked into it? Or was your line unattended and you were off doing something else? If there are people on the beach and you have to leave your rod unattended you should reel in your line until you get back.

Re: Surf fishing question.

It's rare to have an issue with beachcombers. Then again, the tip of my rod is anywhere between 13-15' off the beach and 50-100yards out when it's in a spike. Would have to be someone very, very tall to interfere

I never leave a rod unattended and my question could have been worded better, Let me put it this way.If I am walking up the beach in the surf and someone is fishing am I suppose to just walk around or under the line or do I expect him too reel in or stand there hollering out :Im fishing here Im fishing here"?

Re: Surf fishing question.

you hook someone and you can be held liable in civil court. I've seen it happen in Vero Beach Fl.

you're the one with the barbed hook on the beach...not "Maybel" from Oskaloosa, IA.

Kite boarders have the same issue....Skimboarders and surfers as well.

unless you plan to no witnesses.....chum away buddie! ").

but you'll need to point out your line with best effort....it's part of your poor beach selection...sharing with others and all that... the EMT's are gonna cut your barb off the hook anyways....protect your tackle at least!

the majority of beach interference is going to occur with people that have no idea you've got a hook in the water...others should deserve a good hook'in but know better....

Granted, it's a fishing rod. It's perfectly legal, assuming there are no "No Fishing" signs. You are doing nothing wrong. People are getting more and more unobservant and unaware of their surroundings with every generation.

Again, it's a fishing rod, perfectly legal and reasonable to be where you have it... But the fact remains, you have it there. It is your responsibility. You have the burden of keeping the public safe from the "hazard" you've placed. Yeah, I know... It's a fishing rod.;)

In the world today, not much is as it used to be.

Spike it at the waters edge. Move as the tide moves. If they have to wade to get clotheslined, just enjoy the show.
