Surge brake adjustment?

Hi,

I picked up a brand new dual axle trailer last week for a relative. I don't know what kind of trailer it is, but it's big (about 30' long). The trailer has alum. side rails and galvanized ribs if it's any help in identifying.

Anyways, while towing the empty trailer home (about 8 miles) everytime I came to a stop the trailer brakes locked. I had to install the lock-out to keep from ruining the new tires. When I checked the owners manual and the trailer, there doesn't appear to be any adjustment. I expect that with the boat on it next week, the brakes will be fine because of the extra load, but I'm not sure.

Does anyone know what's happening? The trailer has disc brakes and is BRAND NEW. Is there any way to adjust them?

Thanks in advance,
Chuck

Re: Surge brake adjustment?

No

They work on the weight of the load pushing on the master cylinder which is in the coupling

I have really never seen one lock up the brakes when it is empty  SO i would ask the trailer builder

Disk brakes are generally self adjusting. I suppose with a lack of weight on the trailer that the brakes could lock up while stopping. I suppose if the trailer is that big it probably could have enough weight of it's own to apply the brakes.
