Surge brake shock dampers...

Hey, quick question for the masters:

I'm cleaning up and restoring a Dico surge brake system and I'm just about to reassemble the coupler. The question is: how easy/difficult should it be to push in or pull out the shock damper?

Right now it requires a decent amount of effort move. If it should slide easier, how would I go about freeing it up?

Many thanks,

Re: Surge brake shock dampers...

I just replaced one on a 1500kg trailer, I cannot move the new one by hand. The old one moved in and out with very little effort (it was toast).

They have a force rating (mine was in Nm). This rating will differ from trailer to trailer. A lighter trailer requires less force to surge - and visa versa.

Are there any markings on the damper?

The idea of a shock damper is to dampen the oscillation that can happen when you are braking -- hence preventing rapid brake application/release/application. If the damper moved freely it would not be doing its job. It is after all, a shock absorber.
