I have not been on the forum for a while. I bought a 2014 Toyota Tundra a few years ago and it has done great pulling the boat. We have been keeping it in a slip the past 4 years. This year we are taking a break from the marina and going on the trailer again. Now that I am going from 10 miles a season of trailering to 2k +/-, I need to address an issue before next spring. My truck is rated for trailer weight of 10K. My boat and trailer fully loaded with fuel, water, all the supplies for a weekend overnight, weighs in at 8252 lbs. The trailer is rated for 12K. The trailer is has Draw Tite stainless steel disk brakes, all brake line, and all LED lights with wiring that are all new 3 years ago. Bearings get repacked every year and replaced every other year. Trailer also gets a good wash down with salt away after every splash and is stored inside.

My issue is it is a surge brake system. My truck over a 5k pound trailer recommends a weight distribution hitch. I purchased two different hitch systems designed for surge brakes. The set ups either drag the brakes or they prevent them from working at all. After playing around with adjustments I have come to the conclusion that these WDH setups for surge brakes does not work with my set up. Time for a new direction.

I am going to convert to electric over hydraulic. I am going to need an in-cab brake controller, Coupler, weather proof box for mounting emergency battery and brake unit. Has anyone gone down this path before? I want to make sure I get this right. If need be, I will have it pro installed. Any info, pictures, links to people that have done this set up, or anything else would be greatly appreciated.

WOW this is a good question. Since you presently have disc brake setup, I would op for the hydraulic type myself. But that is just me. Others with more experience will chime in here and offer better advice I'm sure. JMHO!

I installed the Titan unit on my trailer. I use the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 controller.

As far as the coupler is concerned, I just gutted the coupler and put in two large bolts to keep it from sliding.

My question would be do you have a weight distribution hitch that allows for surge brakes? The setup you have now (excluding the hitch) is more then enough
The regular hitch trunions are secured with chains and don't allow for movement back and forth whereas the hitch for surge brakes allows the trunions to slide back and forth through a bracket.
The diff.
