I(my brother)has a 70's Mercury 20 hp thunderbolt, the stator melted, I replaced it,fired up idles fine, but surges @ full or close to wide open throttle. I didn't mess with the timing. It has a new fuel pump, good spark.seems like it's cutting out. All wires are tight and not grounding out. any thoughts will be appreciated. Lou II

Check all your fuel lines and primer bulb. All should be soft and pliable. Also check real close to any screw down type clamps on your fuel line. Its easy to over tighten them and create a crack that is very hard to see. Been there, done that.
