Surprisingly Impressed With Cheapo Pyle Audio System

Hi All,

I'm a bit of an audio snob at home, and place a lot of value on the critical listening of music. So when I had to order a stereo for the boat, I was unsure if I should go with good quality components, or buy something cheap as a starter system. Because of other dollars I put into the boat, and still being unsure about the durability of components in the Canadian climate, I took a flyer on a real real real cheap system from Pyle.

For around $70 on Amazon, I got a Pyle head unit that does Aux, USB, AM/FM, and SD in, and comes with 4 x 6.5" waterproof speakers. It would be difficult for anyone to argue this is anything other than stupid cheap. It even came with adequate pre-tinned, pre-spaded speaker wire to hook up 3 of the 4 speakers, though it was of a very light gauge.

Anyways, I installed two of the speakers facing forward from the rear bench, and installed two speakers in the open bow. Hooked everything up, and was pleasantly surprised by the sound. Plenty of bass, adequate (if not well-defined) treble, and enough EQ and audio settings to tweak the sound to your own preference. For my 15' runabout, this is more than adequate power and sound for my use.

Where it really impressed me though was the amount of bass and clarity compared to stock systems I've heard in other small runabouts. Most of them are bass-light, thin, and underpowered. Compared to them, the Pyle system sounds like a reference system.

So, if you're looking for an inexpensive, theft-deterrent, "don't care if it gets wrecked" system for a smaller boat, an inexpensive Pyle system may be for you.

The specific kit I bought was the PLMRKT34WT - I believe it also comes in black (BK at the end instead of WT).

Good review...am I behind the times noticing that it doesn't have a cd slot?

Nope, no CD slot, though I'm not going to take CDs on the boat anyways - seems the model with the CD slot is about $20 more.

If I can rip tunes to an SD card or USB jump drive, or hook in my iPhone, I'm set. Plus, having a "motorless" head unit is easier on the battery than one that is spinning a CD.

I had low-end stuff (Boss) in my last boat and it served me well for years. I have never been able to do any critical listening in an open boat going down the river at 30 MPH anyway.

Gotcha, I was thinking that they just weren't offering the cd slot any longer. I pretty much only stream music exclusively these days anyway. I like the idea that you can charge a device via the usb port.

CD is a dead technology... Lots of new cars are deleting it, and many aftermarket head units have been doing it for some time. In the marine environment it even makes more sense to kill it off. Without a cd slot, you can completely seal the front face from accidental splashes, and the cd mechs don't like a bumpy ride.

Anyway... pyle.... I've used the entire range of audio stuff, and have built boat systems that competed and won in car audio competitions... Pyle is somewhat decent for sound, but the drawback is they die, often. I used to install them in friends boats when they just wanted sound, but the failure rate was so bad it was far easier to put in a marine kenwood or sony head unit. Haven't ever had to go back and touch one of those.

I tell you what I do......you can grab a free little program called freemake for youtube, it's a mp3 converter.......go on youtube find song or playlist you like copy/past link into freemake and done. it rips the song from the video, in the settings it even has a check box that will auto import the song to Itunes.

My thoughts exactly too. As long as it doesn't sound horrible, it's fine for boat use. And the Pyle system doesn't sound horrible.

In testing it out, one thing I noticed was that it would not stream audio off my iPhone via USB. It will charge the iPhone via USB, but you then need to use the mini-jack to mini-jack audio cable to listen to it.

As smokingcrater said too, I'm not too sure about the durability of the unit. However, considering you can replace the head for about $40 once you have the speakers wired in, it seems like a pretty small risk.

I have also been fairly impressed with my Boss/Pyle system for the price. I picked up 4 Boss speakers for 60 bucks, and head unit and amp for around 80. Sounds very good for the price.

One thing I noticed is that mounting is a big factor with these cheapo systems. I have two speakers that I mounted in the forward "bulkhead" by just cutting a hole and placing them. This open air setup sounds OK, but a little tinny.

The other two I built a simple 5 sided box (no back), then mounted them with the open side of the box against the hull. These sound much better.

Bang on correct on this too.

When I installed them in the rear bench bottom, they did sound thin. As soon as I put the seat cover on though, the bass immediately improved. Same with the ones in the open bow - thinner with the seats off, fuller with the seats on. Obviously these speakers need a bit of a closed baffle to get decent sound. As soon as I filled the storage areas with lifejackets, etc. the sound tightened up even further.

I haven't used their audio equipment, but I did have a pair of Pyle Driver 6X9's come in one of my cars, and they were great!
