This story made the front page of the Houston Chronicle today. The account ended as follows:

The Coast Guard spokesman, Bryant, said the case highlights the importance of carrying an electronic positioning indicator radio beacon, or EPIRB, aboard. Such a device, which starts at about $200, could have signaled for help more quickly and pinpointed to rescuers exactly where the men were.

?We didn't have an EPIRB. I had everything else on there but that,? Phillips said. ?But you can bet your butt I'll have one on the next one.?

Without missing a beat, his wife, Shane, chimed in. ?And I'm going to put a tracking device in his neck.?

The point here is that if those guys had a PLB or and EPRIB, they would have spent a whole lot less time in the water. I know these things are expensive, but by cracky, if you're going to venture offshore you've just gotta have one. These things save lives.

Yeah...

I posted on this just a bit ago... (importance of a bilge pump)...

Seems their entire problem was caused by a faulty float switch...

They were really lucky!

One of the things that I hope this story points out, is just how easy it is for a search aircraft to miss boaters in the water. While a PLB or EPIRB would have been the best option, even a simple signal mirror might have saved them many days at sea.

While I'm sure these guys were determined to survive, the fact that they did is little more than luck. None-the-less, I'm glad they made it home.
