I accidentally got the leads on the battery the wrong way around while trying to jump start it, big spark at the battery terminal and now the motor is dead. How much damge could I have done or is there some fuse protection somewhere? DF 50 2005 model.

Check the fuses under the engine cover and hope you didn't fry the ECU (engine control unit) voltage regulator, and other electrical stuff. Jumper cables are red and black or orange and black for a reasons. For others that read this OBSERVE BATTERY POLARITY BEFORE MAKING ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS.

Thanks mate, was just having one of those days, I have jumped started things dozens of times before but this time.....
I did look for fuses but they did not seem to be in a real obvious place

Then break out the voltmeter and follow the voltage from the battery.

That or check your service manual for locations

Sounds like you need a new battery also if you have to keep jump starting it

Turns out the fuse protected it, it was housed in an inconspicuos white box, total cost $350 for a new battery, fuse and a house call by the mechanic, not bad value. He also found a rusty hose clamp at the bottom of the main water hose - mild steel! Replaced it with a stainless one.
