Hi folks. A friend and I were just given a a sea nymph from a relative. It's got a dt65 suzuki in it. The boat is a project. Gotta put new floor in and repair a bunch of stuff, etc. But I was tinkering with the engine today. We got it not running. But I traced the whole fuel line into the carbs and cleaned everything from the tank to the carbs. So, I got the boat running on land (with a pair of earmuffs for water) and it sounded pretty good. PLugs were a little oily, but probably form sitting.
So, I moved on to the lower unit to inspect the impeller and for the life of me couldnt get the lower unit off. Now, I had an old 75hp chrysler, so I figured it would just pop out like that one. When I got the bolts off, it fell about 2 to 3 inches then was held up by what I think was the clutch. I couldnt figure out what to do from there. So I bolted it all back together. But then I noticed I was stuck in reverse. Not me, really...the lower unit. the arm up by the engine (that connects to the cable to the remote control) was stuck in the reverse position and it wouldnt budge. I suppose I put it back together the wrong way?
It came loose easily enough when I unbolted it, but putting it back together it gave me resistance. I hope I didn't break anything. If you got any advice, please help... I will eventually get the manual, but right now I am just going on my own limited knowledge of suzuki outboards. I know this is lengthy, but one more thing. If did drain the lower unit oil, which unfortunately had water in it (Creamy color) I will probably have to put a new seal set in there, but I am ok with that, as well as a new impeller if needed. But all I want to know (w/o busting it) is how to get the lower unit off so I CAN service it. ALso, could the reverse being stuck be the result of having no fluid. I didn't have any tonight and will get some asap, but I didn't know if this was a pressurized thing were without fluid in it it would get stuck in gear. Of coarse, I didnt run it w/o lube, but maybe you got some pointers to take me to the next step. I feel like an idiot, even after having my old chrysler apart and back together again. It's to dark to play with it anymore tonight, but it's still eating away at my mind on what I did wrong. Any help would be much appreciated...
