Suzuki DT65 transmission troubles

I own a 1988 dt65. I believe there might be an issue with the transmission/gear box. With the motor running and the throttle in neutral position, everything is fine; However, when I engage forward gear, I hear grinding and the boats stays put. Out of the water, the prop seems to engage, but just enough to make it spin. I have inspected the ring and pinion gears. They look great. The clutch cam looks good as well. The clutch dog seems to be worn a bit. Could that be the problem? What else would cause this?

if the dog is worn so is the gear lugs.
have you tried removing the shift cable and shifting the unit manually to isolate cable/control box issues ?
and when did this problem start ?

I have not tried to isolate the gear box from the controls or shift cables. I will try that this afternoon. The problem began yesterday. The gears engaged just fine up until then. Thanks for the reply, I will keep you posted on the results.

Are the gear lugs located at the inner point of the ring gear? Is that what the clutch dog meshes with?

Re: Suzuki DT65 transmission troubles

The gears shift just fine if I do it manually. So the problem isn't what I thought. However, the clutch slide must be pushed about 1/2 inch toward reverse in order for the gears to be in neutral. When I engage forward from the control box, it stops about 1/2 inch from clicking into forward gear. I dont have enough adjustment left in the cable to allow the gears to engage forward then return back to neutral. Its like my cable shrunk!
