Suzuki Lower Unit Question

I just purchased a boat with a 40 hp Suzuki motor. Not sure of the year, but it has oil injection. I have not tried to start it yet, and was checking things out and noticed the following:

When I put the engine in forward (not running) the lower unit does not hook up to the powerhead. When I pull the the start cord - looks like it connects. Are the Suzuki's equiped with something that engages the prop once the engine starts?

When I put the engine in reverse it engages right away.

I also am in need of the latch that fits on the back of the engine cover and need a source for used parts.

Any help is appreciated.

Re: Suzuki Lower Unit Question

Most problems with Suzi gearboxes are failure to go in reverse due to wear. if reverse is fine then you may just need to adjust shift linkage.
I would expect that only small outboards with forward gear only may have a centrifugal clutch.
Otherwise you may need to open lower end and check for damage
cheers!

Re: Suzuki Lower Unit Question

When you turn the prop, does is make a loud clicking sound? This is normal, the clutch dog jumping the ramps on the forward gear. There is a definite mechanical connection with no difference if the engine is running or not. Run the engine and try the gears. NO outboard should be shifted without the engine running or the prop shaft turned at the time of shifting.
