I've found a 1990 Chriscraft 198 cuddyfor sale. It was allowed to freeze up and cracked the 4.3 omc motor and owner pulled outdrive.

Would the volvo penta 5.7ltr aq260 with 275 outdrive in my current boat (1988 vintage) bolt into this boat. would i have control and electrical problems?

Chriscrsft is a good hull. No?

My current boat is rotting out!!

Please comment!

well from a automotive stand point the 5.7 will bolt right in where a 4.3 was basicly a 4.3 is a 5.7 with the front 2 cylinders milled off

I checked and found the boat was available with a 5.7. Would the hole in the transum be right for the Volvo penta?

you could probaly bolt the 5.7 up to the original drive

I don't think I could use the original drive with my volvo penta exhaust/water intake setup.

Anybody know if the hole in the transum could be a problem? Making the hole bigger is easy, smaller is tougher.

Anyone know anything about the 1990 chris crafts in general. Good/Bad?

I'm going to look at the boat this morning.

The hole in the transom would have to be bigger for the volvo. I don't think I would go that route though. If you want to switch over to a volvo, at least get a little newer and find one with hydraulic trim. The 275 was tilt only.

Trying to hook the 5.7 to your Cobra transom shield is possible, just need a completely different exhaust system from what is on the older Volvo. You would also have to change the gears in the outdrive to a different gear ratio. No, just changing props will not do it.

You're right, not the most practical outdrive but it is paid for.

Could I switch the outdrive at a later time if the rest of the swap works. Would the newer outdrive have a different hole pattern through the transum than the 275? What outdrive would you look for?

The best way to go would be from the 290 drives and up.

I take it the 290 drive transum shields are different in size/shape?

Would the newer drives accept my existing flywheel cover and drive shaft?

Re: Swap 4.3 OMC out for a 5.7 VP

Well I went and looked at the boat. It's in fairly good condition, much better than my current boat. I'm going to make sure all my VP stuff will fit, but I'm pretty sure it will.

I'm not sure about the throttle and shift cables. I'm thinking i might have to change thoses out too and since this newer boat is nine inches longer, I could end up having to replace those as well.

It did turn out that the original outdrive is available. An OMC from 1990. Can't decide if I would want that or not. It does have the power trim but I'd have to change out the exhaust and the gearing in the outdrive to handle my 5.7 as told by Don S.

they only want $500 for the chris craft hull and its complete minus the motor and outdrive. If I could drop my motor and drive in this boat for without a lot of extras i can't see why not!

Please give some opinions!!

If you have the time and the ability then why not there is nothing like taking on a project and making things work that others cant when it's all done you can sit back with a cold one and say "I did that" if you do post your project with pics i'm sure we would all like to see it take shape

Re: Swap 4.3 OMC out for a 5.7 VP

I'm going to call the guy monday and see if he sold it over the weekend. I hate to be to impulsive, especially if there is something I haven't thought of that could leave me with a $500 planter!

If I do get it you can bet I'll post some pics!

Any other thoughts out there? What am I forgetting?

Wiring problems? Guages working?
