Can I swap the crankshaft from 1978 Johnson 70 to 1985 evinrude 70?
The evinrude had the driveshaft rusted in and about 1/2" broke and is rusted in the crank.
I have a Johnson that I could use parts from. Help?

I don't see any reason why they wouldn't swap. Bearings, caps and other peripherals are more or less the same. The 1978 will be a 4-spline driveshaft. I think the 1985 is, too. Double check the position of the keyway - should be the same, but you never know.

The fine spline did not show up till 89 model year.---I think the 85 crank is a different material, different manufacturing method used.----Should work.-----Take time fitting the stuff.

It will fit but you may need to use the lower end cap off the 1978 as there was some long and short snouts. The 78 is a cast crank and the 85 is a forged...
