I have a 69 Johnson 40 horse electric shift, can I swap it with a manual shift 40 horse lower unit? It keeps popping out of gear, but has constant voltage.

The drive shafts are the exact same, but there are many more changes to be made.It would be the easiest to find a 1969 40 horse with manual shift that has a bad head and swap out the power heads and the remote control unit.
You might just as well get a complete working 69 40 horse. It would be less trouble and you can sell or keep the other for parts.

The motor runs perfect in reverse and at 1/3 and less throttle in forward. I omhed the wires by the powerhead they were at 8 omh's. I filled the lower unit with 75w/90w synthetic. The motor runs so good i would hate to scrap it?????

According to my Seloc book they didn't make a manual shift 40 h for that year, I have a super sea horse 40 but not sure the year, It looks the same vintage

You may have a problem with the forward gear or the electric clutch dog. When you say that it runs fine in reverse that may be because you don't do 5500 rpm in reverse.
The forward and the reverse gear are the same and can be interchanged. So if you are very adventurous AND have a FACTORY manual ,you can try that

Sure they did. There was a 40 manual start, a 40 electric start/manual shift, and a 40 electric start/electric shift.

jody, have you checked to make sure it isn't the prop hub slipping? Also, you have the wrong oil in it. That might be the problem. You are supposed to be using BRP "Premium Blend" from an Evinrude dealer. Those are friction clutches in there and synthetic is slippery stuff, not to mention it is way too thick.

There is no clutch dog.

Thanks, I tried to get type c oil but couldn't find it. How do you check the prop hub?

I will call around to local dealers to see if I can get some type c oil.

Easiest way to check the hub is to take a Sharpie and mark the prop and prop nut. The prop nut is pinned to the propshaft, not the prop, so if the prop pins on its hub while running, your marks will no longer be in line with each other when you check them again...
