Hi All,
I have a 77 20" Grew (glass). I have an inline 6 merc gm 165 in there now. For reason that are my own, i want to drop a 5.0litre merc ford into it. I have the new 888 outdrive that matches the V8. I hope to use the existing transome plates and gimble assembly

what can i expect to do? is it possible?
the main question: do i have to re-glass and recut the boat's transome?

Nope,... The Hole is the same....

You'll need to build new foreward motor mounts...
And,
The transom assemblies may not be the same...

Thanks for the reply... engine has been purchased.

If anyone can post a guide to swapping these type engines or link to any kind of info that would be great!

Lots on this web site, many hour of reading to decipher a small amount of info.

At the top of the forum there is an "adult's only" sticky that contains links to download the factory service manuals. The manuals cover (in detail) how to pull the drive and engine and also cover the installation of the drive and engine. That should pretty much cover you other than the modifications needed to the boat for the motor mount.

To go short you need the Ford flywheel house, corresponding (v6-v8) inner- transom plate and fabricate side engine supports. The inner transom plate you have now is for il engines only and the GM flywheel house not fit the Ford.
You can use the existing (outside) gimball assy with the 888 o/d.
Do you have the Ford exhausts and Y pipe or run through hull.?

Swapping a 165HP to a 188HP engine you can;t get parts for really makes sense. I hope you have fun. Do not expect huge speed increases. That little 165 was a torque monster, although took to time to run up. Your V8 will get there faster but top speed I bet will not be as high as you think.

I have the ford exhust Y pipe... I hope to hook it up to the outdrive. In your opinion I should start shopping for inner transome plate?

Fordiesel69:
I like my inline 6 but top end (30km) is to slow for the amount of racket it makes. This is my second inline 6 in this boat so I know there is nothing wrong with the engine, WOT 4200RPM. The boat as I mentioned is a 77' Grew --> translation: it is very heavy. I was hoping to get an extra 10km per hour out of the V8 so I can cruise at 30KM/hour and not have it at WOT. I beleive this is a reasonable expectation.

Do you have the flywheel housing (rear engine mount) on the Ford? If you do, measure the mounting (bolts) width and start looking for an inner transom plate.
Dont expect to go (much) faster, quicker yes!

What about the (donor) boat the 888 came out?

Thanks for the info Frank and others. I didnt realize I would only get a couple KM or Milles out from this swap. I am putting this project on hold until I get a better idea of the benefits.

Just so i am clear - everyone agrees i will not get 10KM/hour out of this swap?

As a rule of thumb it takes 12-16 HP per each MPH increase.

Here is the math:

10 KPH = 6.21 MPH

6.21 MPH (12HP per MPH) = 74.52 additional HP needed for a 10 KPH increase

6.21 MPH (16HP per MPH) = 99.36 additional HP needed for a 10 KPH increase

You still can use the 888 o/d 1.50:1 with an other (Bigger) V engine in the future.

Please don't completely flame me if I'm wrong, which i probebly am.
My 888 5.0L is 188 HP it's my understanding that I can get to 220HP with that engine by replacing the 2 barrel carb and intake manifold to a 4 barrel system?

No flame, just facts. You are correct, but again the HP you need, has to be more than the 302 can give you. Im almost convinced a 350 may only JUST cut it for your gains. You would need the 4 barrel or EFI model to obtain that goal. With that your fuel consumption will be thru the roof.

However the V8 will be much much quieter.

Facts are good

If i can get an extra say 5-KMPH with the new carb and intake on the 5.0L and quieter, I might be happy with that. Especially the quieter part.

So if anyone here has an intake for a 302 Ford with a 4 Barrel carb for sale please let me know ;-)

Planning a my way restore for this boat, when i was a kid & the boat was new, i remember going 50MPH plus:eek: on Lake Texoma.

I am going forward with this engine swap... my I6 runs great! i dont get anywhere near 50MPH more like 30 MPH. But as mentioned earlier I own a heavy boat.

Where do you live? Is it worth you coming to get this engine? I'm in Garson, Ontario. If you are serious about buying my engine, let me know.

Joey,

I don't know how you got a 1977 20' Grew with a 165. They did not offer a 165 in the 20' Grew that year. The only boat that the 165 was offered in was the SS194, which is a 17'6" boat. If the boat is indeed a 20' (SS214 or 215), then somebody must have slipped that motor in after the boat left the factory.

With a 165 in it, that boat should do 36 mph top end, (58 km/hr), and cruise at about 24 at 2900 rpm. If as you say it is only doing 30 km/hr at top end, then there is something seriously wrong. It may not be with the engine itself. There could be other problems, like a hull full of water. Check the space between the hull and the floor for water.
