i have a 1981 cobia monte carlo. it has a volvo penta i4 aq120b i/o. the motor got rained in through the carb before i purchased. i pulled some of the motor apart and consider it mostly trashed. the outboard drive not sure about. i was wondering if and what kind of motors and outs could be swaped with. not sure what may fit. fyi this is my first boat project so any info would be helpful. thanks.

Re: swap motor

How much of the motor did you pull apart?? If not too much..you may be able to get it running again to last you a season. Thats a Ford inline 4 cylinder right??

Re: swap motor

I think if your motor isnt locked up from the water in carb you should be able to remove spark plugs and suck out remaining water, spray some WD-40 inside, it wil help with removing the moister left in motor. and i have seen others fill each cylinder from plug with diesel and let set for a day if it did lock it up, Diesel will set it free.

Re: swap motor

I agree with Eute..get some really good penetrating oil in the cylinders...like PB blaster or Seafoam. DO NOT try to start the engine by starter. Take a large 1/2 in. breaker bar and a socket that fits the front crankshaft bolt. Rock it slowly back and forth CAREFULLY. Make sure the cylinders have plenty of the above solvents. DO NOT rotate the engine more than a little bit opposite the direction it is supposed to rotate because you will destroy the water pump in the drive, but from what it sounds like you should replace it anyway. Cheap insurance.

Free the engine and if you havent taken the cylinder head off yet...do a compression test with a good gauge. If all cylinders are over 100 PSI..you just may have a season left in that engine. Dont strip it down until you are sure its trashed.

Re: swap motor

Rebuild of course will be better in the long run..good machine shop nearby or any of the online resources here will get you going.

Re: swap motor

not familier with the types that you can go with. i know the Volvo parts are high but with new rings, valves guides, cam bearings and rod bearings is about all you need to make a motor last a few seasons.

Re: swap motor

Best bang for buck starts with the boat...

Get a good look at the floors, transom, bilge area, etc. Search these forums like Sherlock Holmes. There is a treasure of valuable information here about engine swaps, tech info, etcccc. Decide if the boat is worth putting money into FIRST before sinking dime one into it. Look your purchase over with a magnifying glass. Just tryin to save you some money if the boat itself is a mess underneath. As always..there are some EXPERTS here to help you whatever you decide to do.

Re: swap motor

i found a guy that would rebuild it for 1200 does that sound reasonable or he would sell a six cylinder for 1400 that fit. dont know much about the i4. is it a powerful motor for skiing and tubing or would the six be better.

Ayuh,... I think you'll find you have a Volvo B series motor...
Another of the Same is the Only motor that'll work with your outdrive,+ hull...
