Motor swap
Thanks for having me on here!!! Been creeping around and reading some post and realize you people know more than me so I have a question. Sorry if this is wrong forum, but I do have a pontoon. I have a 96' Johnson 50 2stoke and I have a 1989 evinrude 150 xp that has been rebuilt. Can I swap to the evinrude with all my omc controls and plugs on the pontoon that were for the johnson or will there be some hang ups? Thanks for any help and I love the site!

Re: Swap

controls, steering and fuel lines will work, w/o mods. You need to look at the electrical plug. I think they changed from big red plug to multiple amphenol connectors in '96.

Re: Swap

Thanks for the info! Is there an adapter or is this something I will have to splice?

Re: Swap

There is an adapter for it. Check with a BRP Dlr. What's the boat rated for HP wise ??

Re: Swap

the 150 might be a touch heavy for it,but should be a problem realy.
there are a lot of boats putting on max hp ratings using 4 strokes that are a lot heavier than the two smokes.
just put on a nice easy to pane prop for it and keep a touch back on the revs and all will be fine.
once on the plane you can open it up without any fear as all the strain is mainly on the take off upto plane.

Re: Swap

If you over power it look out for your insurance company and the coast guard.

Re: Swap

What if the larger motor has 2 steering cables and my toon has only one?

I think any 150 up will have two steering cables---

My pontoon is rated for a 60hp- I put a 110 on it 4 yrs ago & have had zero problems-
