I would like to know if 1973 Evinrude 65 hp electric shift controls can be replaced with 1970 Johnson 60hp electric shift controls? I replaced my my 1970 Johnson 60 hp Johnson motor and controls with an Evinrude 65 hp (65273S) motor with selectric pushbutton controls. I prefer the Johnson controls over the Evinrude. Are they compatible with each other? It looks like the harnesses are the same. I just don't know if they control wiring is the same.

The 1973 65 hp was NOT electric shift !----Your motor is a 1972 model.-----The number 2 after the 65 identifies the year as 1972---If it has the round black plug then controls will interchange.----If there is a red or yellow plug they will not.

Thank you for the response and the info about the year of the motor. I believe it's the yellow plug. I will have to look at it again. The only reason I wanted to use the Johnson controls is that they look better and I prefer the way it operates. The evinrude pushbutton controls work just fine. Thanks again.

As Racer indicated...Additionally, Be aware, the single lever with full electric gear shift controls use an internal gear selector switch that is quite expensive and getting difficult to find....So I'd suggest you may want to hang on to the evinrude push button style as a backup.
