If anyone on here has read my previous post you know that I have a 1982 stingray with a Mercruiser 140 that some of you have helped me to bring back from the dead. The motor ran great. Started everytime first turn of the key and the boat was alot of fun for me and my family. Sadly coming back from the lake 3 weeks ago I hydroplaned in my truck and although I was able to stop the truck with out flipping the boat was ripped off of the trailer and ended up wrongside up in a creek. The transom was cracked as was the uper outdrive. I want to get back out on the lake but here is my problem. I got another boat that is an 88 galaxy that is a nicer boat for cheap. It originally had a 170 in it but now has a 140. The 140 is completely blown and unusable. I have my 82 140 that ran great. Can I use that motor in this boat? I see some differences in the linkages. Is it ok to swap a 170 for a 140? I wasnt sure if the Alpha 1 would match or not. They have it in there but that is no proof that it works. Anybody know where I can pick up a used 170 to put back in. I really appreciate all the help last time an enjoyed my time on the lake. I am ready to get back out again. Let the knowledge begin

I think basically a 140 is a 140, I swapped out a 1971 140 and put a 2007 140 engine in it. The outdrive was also a 1971 vintage. What I had to do with my swap was to buy a 12.75 fly wheel so I could reuse my starter. So I would check to see if you a 14" flywheel on both or a 12.75 on one and a 14 on the other. I also had to buy a new engine coupler because the old ones bolted to the crank and the new style bolt to the flywheel. So I would also check this. Also I ran into the old engine had large cylinder head ports and the new engine had small ports so it took a special gasket to bolt the old manifold to the new engine.
I am no expert but I did swap the 1971 gm. 140 with a new 2007 140 in 2008.
What do you have to loose I would pull the motors and go for it.

I have both motors pulled already and the problem I was having was 1. Motor mounts were not the same and 2. Exaust pipe wasnt the same. I have pulled the transom mount off of my 82 Stingray and plan to put that on my 88 Galaxy to fix those 2 problems. The flywheel starter and coupler are still attatched to the 82 and I am hoping they should all work with the 82 transom mount installed. I hope
