I am in need of a motor as I bought a boat that was water logged. They forgot to pull the plug during winter. I have a 22 foot, great forgot the name and its dark so cant see. I have had it for years now think I would know. Anyhow it has what appears to be a chevy engine style v8. I could be wrong but I think it is a merc cruiser 275 HP. The boat that is for sale with a motor is a 120 HP 4 cylinder from a Reinel boat. The question is can I put the 4 cylinder in place of the v8? I am not going to be pulling anybody at any rate of speed. only want to get the boat on the Lake. Is that too small? I understand it might take a bit longer to get from point A to point B. Or is this not a good idea. I have a car z28 camero engine, will that work better. The boat for sale runs and looks pretty decent. As you can see I am not a boat guy, yet.

If you can get the entire drive, then it will work. 120HP will not run a 22 foot boat very well unless it is a tinny, but it will probably plane and work. However, I can guarantee that you can find any old SBC and replace what you have for less than the cost of that 2.5L/120hp Mercruiser. Any stock SBC from a truck will be usable as a marine engine and work better than the little 2.5L, and all you will have to do is swap the marine components, if you find a car SBC, all you need is a marine camshaft and the rest of the marine components.

If you must go for a 4 cylinder, get a 140 (3 litre)....

If all you will be doing is trolling the 4 banger will push the boat but the work involved would be more than just swapping out a SBC truck engine. Be sure if you swap the 350 that you get the correct vintage (2 piece rear main seal vs 1 piece). You didn't give us much info regarding year.

My big concern if I had that boat and it was water logged is, what condition are the transom/stringers are in? If you pull the engine be sure to check the transom for rot.

I believe it is in ok condition. I did remove the outdrive portion but left the section it attaches to, to the boat. But when I did the out drive u joint turn to rust although it still turns ok. The boat is a Silverliner want to say in the early 90's. I suppose I will need to have the outboard part fitted with new u joint and shaft? or can I make it work by shining it up and replacing the ujoint? The other boat that has the 4 banger is for $400 comes with trailer. I suppose it is a good deal by iteself, but i dont think my wife would appreciate it as I already have two boats.

Read up on u-joint Bellows, Gimble bearing etc ;) Your starter was underwater for a long time too. You need to look at your trim fluid reservoir. The four banger plan is a bad one unless the entire drive and engine were super good and all swapped together. That would get you the gear ratio from the 120. I am not convinced the boat will plane without a lot more info. You are going to be buying props too. There is no way the combo from the other boat will be right with a 22 footer. And no way that the pieces you have will result in a combo that will work.

What you need to do is read, read, read. What sounds possible to you sounds like a cluster to the rest of us, and it will end up expensive as you get nickel and dimed to death. Either way you go is going to cost, but ultimately another 350 will probably work out to be less in the long run. No on the Z28 unless you change the cam. Needs a marine, truck or RV cam as was noted.
