I'm removing the 898 merc from my 24 ft slickcraft and I am replacing it with a , Corvette turned marine engine
(350 4 bolt main 1978ish)

the engine is coming from a friend who had it pulled out of his Corvette and completely rebuilt into a new marine engine.

will this 350 no matter the year take the same drive?
I know the 898 takes a pre alpha or I believe alpha 1 gen 1.

just looking to start searching for my outdrive

thanks for the help

your existing drive should work just fine AS LONG AS the new horsepower is under 300 HP and the cam is a non-agressive cam that would cause exaust reversion

Thanks doctur

currently I dont have a drive for it. I'm hunting down one and wanted to make sure I get the right series . So the 350 will also take a pre alpha or alpha one?

yep, the biggest consideration is the size of the flywheel and if the starter is a straight across or stagger mount
main difference is the width of the rear housing motor mount bolts

Ayuh,..... MC-1, vs Alpha 1 is 'bout the date of manufacture, not anything to do with which motor,.....

please define by "completely rebuilt int a new marine engine"

because unless the motor has been completely torn down, and build up with proper parts, I wouldnt use it.

by proper parts, Vortec heads, LCQ pistons at about 9:1 compression, brass core plugs, marine head gaskets, cam with 112 lobe separation under 268 degrees duration (as in a truck motor not a corvette motor)

I personally dont like the 1985 or older 2-piece RMS motors and really prefer the roller motors myself.

Thanks for the input Scott.

normally my concern would be the same as yours. The only reason I dont is because the person is a very good friend of my fathers who witnessed the motor be rebuilt as well.

he basically owned a scrapyard and an older Corvette came in the yard. He yanked the motor and sent it over to Yogi my dad marine guy. He then proceeded to tear down complete and full rebuild with new everything including bolt ons. Then he installed that motor into his boat. Few years later his boat rotted out and he took that motor back out winterized it and stored it in a container where it is now. The only catch is the motor is completely free to me just gotta pick it up!

just didn't want to then later run into a host a problems as I try to install drive. He sold the drive he had on that engine

if it was completely torn down, old pistons thrown away, and then rebuilt as a marine motor. you should really quit saying corvette. nothing special about the corvette motors of the late 70's disco barge era. they were low compression SBC smog motors that made less power than a stock chevy cruise of today.
