swapping motors

I have a 85 19ft thundercraft skiboat with a blown 3.0 omc and a stringer drive behind it. I have a 888 mercruiser that runs was thinking about trying to put this motor on the boat. I know the 888 outdrive has a different hole in the transom but was wondering if I epoxied a piece of inch and a half plywood in the stringer type hole and cut out new hole to fit the 888 drive would the epoxied hole hold up stong enough and would it last for a long time?Thanks for any info guys.

If the tramsom is properly rebuilt and then cut out for the mercruiser it should work, but it's alot of work making things fit right
