Swapping OMC Outdrives

With help from this forum, I was able to find out that it is possible to swap a 74 electric shift outdrive with a 1980 outdrive. It is a very nice retired gentleman who is selling the 80 at a fantastic price. I will not know until I see it if it is the original hydraulic assist or has been changed to the full mechanical shift. If it is the hydraulic am I CRAZY to proceed?

Yes !! get the fully mechanical shift. Just pulled an electric shift and swapped in a Mercruiser. If I had to do it again I would go hunting for a mechanical shift and do what you are talking about.
