Swapping out Hondas?

After over a year of searching, I just purchased a 2004 Honda BF25 (remote) outboard motor. I have not actually seen my new purchase. A friend in Portland (400 miles away) found it on Craigslist, had it tested/inspected for me and made the transaction.

I have a 16' aluminum fishing boat that came with a sweet little 2004 Honda BF 9.9(remote). With just me in the boat it did alright (14 mph/gps), but after adding a fishing buddy and some gear/beer, the little motor was not cutting it.

QUESTIONS- Because the two outboards are the same year and make, is it just a matter of undoing the cables and connections going to the 9.9 and plug them into the 25? I am also wondering (if it is plug & play) should I hold onto my 9.9 for the water bodies that have horse power restrictions?

SIDE QUESTIONS- The boat has a 35hp rating on it, but since that it is a 1981 rating, and would have been rated for a lighter 2 stroke, did I make the right decision to go with the 25hp 4 stroke? Could I have safely gone to a heavy 35hp?

Thanks

Re: Swapping out Hondas?

Newbie,
Question 1- Let's see you want to use your control from the 9.9 and install on the BF25 that you just bought but hav'nt seen right?? Does both motors have power t&t?? If so the control box has a wiring harness that must fit the BF25. You should know right away. Don't touch the cables yet until you determine the fit. If its a good fit then go thru your starting procedure and see if it starts, now you may have to adjust your cables(throttle cable) depending on how's it running. I did this once but on a 9.9 and F25 Yamaha.

Question 2- I would have gone with a little more HP but then again if it planes your boat it should be alright. I dont think there's much difference(weight) btw. a 25 and 40hp.

Congrats on the BF25, I have a 2001 BF25hp on a little 11' Whaler and it's a pocket rocket
