I have a 1987 3.0 with a alpha one sterndrive. I am replacing it with a 1984 alpha on sterndrive. I bought new gaskets for installing the drive. I also bought the new pump kit to replace it while I have it off. Is there anything else I should replace while I have it off the boat. Bellows all look good, gimble bearing feels solid.

I would also replace the U-joints. they are right there and its a lot cheaper in labor to do them when you have everytihng apart and exposed like that. Gimble bearings usually need replacing every 2-3 years, If you havent done that then I would reccomend that too.

Swap out the outdrive gear oil too. That way you know the maintenance on the outdrive?

Are your gearing ratios the same or close? Just a question incase you notice a performance difference.

Check the u joints for slop, put a new impeller in it, put it on & run it...

If you hear any unusual noises, check the alignment & gimbal bearing...
Gimbal bearings last a LONG time if they are properly lubed & engine alignment is good......;)

Re: Swapping out Sterndrives

With the sterndrive sitting on the floor there seams to be a little oil leaking out by the u-joints. Could this be from the nut not being tight or should I replace the o-ring just inside the nut.
