Any last minute tips for swapping out outboards. I will be taking off a 1993 70hp Johnson, and putting on 1988 90hp Johnson. Same bolts, same controls. Anything I should watch out for? This is for all you veteran engine swappers!!:D

Yup that 90 is a v4 and a lot heavier than your 70 so be careful when moving/lifting it.

You will want to install the steering cable into the new outboard BEFORE you bolt it onto the transom. I usually hoist the motor onto the transom, slide it all the way over to the port side then install the steering cable. Then you slide the motor back over to the center and bolt it on.

Also make sure to properly clean out the mounting holes in your transom and seal them with fresh 3m 4200 when you are installing the new motor.

Thanks. We have a forklift ready for action. Good tip on the steering cable. I have the 4200 ready to go also. Do you just try to get most of the old stuff out with a screw driver or is there a better way. I have a putty knife for the outside.

Yeah I usually just use whatever I have at hand. Screwdriver works fine. 4200 is like a semi-hard rubber material when it is dry so it should come off without much effort.

Now if the last motor was sealed with 5200 then you might be in for some more work. 5200 needs to be drilled out of the mounting holes before you install the new motor.

Well it all went very smooth! Went on like a charm. Today I hooked everything up and it fired right up and ran like a champ! Gonna take it to the lake for trial tomorrow night, then out for the real stuff if that works out!

it'd be cool to know exactly how your top end (speed) increases.

Did you know your gps'd speed on the 70?
