I have an aluminum Starcraft 170LE and I would like to install a swim platform on the starboard side of the transom. I hate the thought of drilling holes through the transom, but I guess it must be done. What's involved with installing a swim platform on an aluminum boat?

I'm pretty sure that the transom has a wood core and my guess is that I will have a difficult time tightening the two lower bolts working through the access hatch. Is 5200 a good sealant to insure the job doesn't leak?

One last question... can anyone recommend a good swim platform for my application?

Re: Swim Platform for Starcraft

It would'nt be a big deal.. Use plenty of 5200 on the bolts, both inside and outside the hull.. No leaks... To clean up the excess 5200 that will splugge out from the bolts when you tighten them, a little mineral spirits or de-natured alcohol does wonders...

I would use fairly heavy aluminum backing plates (1/4" thick) on the inside of the hull where the bolts go thru to help spread out the weight load..

As for recomending a platform, really could'nt... Find the one that seem "overbuilt".. Nice and strong...

Teak looks nice, plastic lasts longer (least, thats what they say)..
