I have an 18' center console Wellcraft with a 125 HP outboard motor. How do I know what is the proper vertical location to put a small single step swim platform? Too high and it is hard to use, too low and it submerges while under way.

Re: swim platform location

Would just a foldable ladder work? That is what I had on a F&S boat and it is fine. Then again, the kids use the rear casting deck like a platform to jump from.

I'm interested in hearing how to determine this. My guess is to take someone along and have them watch while you plane boat out.

BL...

A foldable ladder might work, but we thought the platform would make it easier for the kids to get in and out. A rope ladder definitely does NOT work!!!

Anybody else have any advice on ladders or platforms?

My kids are 9 & 11 and have no problem using the ladder. It has 4 steps I think and folds up at midpoint. Don't take off with the ladder down though :p It makes a heck of a ruckass.

BL...

Kwk,

Leave your boat, at rest-fully floating, in the water for a few minutes and see where the scum line develops. That's your height.

Or, get out of the boat in enough water so the boat is floating freely and mark a line about an inch above the water line.

there you have it- dj knows these things :D
i have/had the foldable on my boat. you can drill & mount easily. it doesn't touch the water folded up, held by the stock bungee cord. and yep, it will make a nice rooster tail, and slap together and make a racket if left down. i pulled it off for now, as i'm just fishing.
