switch keeps melting?!?

Is it rated at 24V? Are you sure you are actually pulling 24V and not 12V? You need to put a meter on the switch output to be sure. I'm thinking you will only get 12V and that means you are pulling more current to feed the motor causing heat and melted parts.

If the boat originally had an older 12/24 volt motor it is very possible the wiring needs to be changed and he is indeed running 12V not 24 although performance of the motor would be down considerably. Start by letting us know how many wires run from the batteries to the bow panel. It should be either three or four if this was originally a 12/24 system.
