Hypothetically, if I had my two wires coming from the powerhead hooked up to the solenoid wires in the reverse, what would be the outcome?

Neutral button pressed = ?
Forward button pressed = ?
Revese button pressed = ?

I'm not thinking well enough today to figure this out on my own. I'm hoping I just had the wires switched over last night because what happened was, my engine started with the neutral button pressed and I stayed in forward gear. Pressing forward gear kept me in forward gear, and putting it in reverse actually put me in neutral which doesn't make sense to me. Reverse means both solenoids should have power so reverse should work with the wires hooked up either way I think.

Is this a hydro-electric shift, model number?

50273C I've seen it referred to as electric shift, but I've also seen wording of hydro electric shift, selectric shift, and the like and don't know the correct terminology other than it is an electric shift gearcase.

You have a hydro-electric shift, voltages as follows.
Forward gear = no voltage to either wire.
Neutral = voltage to green wire only.
Reverse = voltage to both green and blue wire at the same time.
Is that what you were looking for?

No, not really.. It seems I might have larger issues. If I had my wires connected backwards, then when I pressed the reverse button, I should still have reverse, correct? Since both solenoids would be energized regardless, if I have the wires hooked up wrong, both are still giving juice. If that is the case, then I still have another issue because when I pressed the reverse button, I think it went to neutral.
Neutral button was forward
Forward was forward
Reverse was neutral

Crud.

I think I might need to take my controls apart and make sure everything is clean and lubed up. I really don't think its a lower unit problem.

Re: switched wires on 72 electric shift

If its a selectric which is not the same as elec hydro, switching the wires would cause reverse to go forward and forward would be reverse. pushing N should cut power from both wires.

While were on the topic of selectric I resealed mine and filled it with OMC premium blend, the replacment for C and its jumping out of gear. I drained it and there was water in fluid again. I noticed when I changed water pump out the drive shaft was worn down could water from the pump be leaking down through here?

thanks

You're going to have to be a little more specific than just a generic post like that. I've been through that section many different times. What specifically in the top secret section were you talking about?

It works great with the wires hooked up correctly. Now I just need to figure out the cause of the surging.

Glad you got your shift problem fixed. Start a new post explaining your surging problem, I bet someone will be able to help you.
