I am looking at switching my cam in my volvo 225E/ Chevy 305. I have a set of stock GM Hydraulic Roller lifters in my garage. I also have a set of comp R racing liftes out of my old race car. Can I use these in the boat of do I need to go back with flat tappet?. And also can you use roller lifters on a flat tappet cam? I have never used flat tappet lifters before also had rollers in my race cars so I am new to this type of animal.

Thanks
Matt

Re: switching lifters??

Ok, here goes, roller lifters HAVE to be used on a roller cam, also there are solid rollers and hydraulic rollers (Solid is race only) they work the same as solid and hydraulics on a conventional flat cam (Which isn't actually flat by the way, there is just enough ramp to them that it makes the lifter slowly rotate around the lobe) Ok that said, when installing a new cam, you have to use new lifters. On a limited use you can use used rollers on a new or used roller cam but will not last too long. As with any cam lifter set up, or any wear items for that matter, these parts wear together and have matching wear patterns. Valves, rocker arms, pistons etc should always go back into there original positions, if performing an overhaul, where items can be reused if within specs. Also when going to a roller cam, the distributor cam gear has to be the correct type, usually bronze or steel for a roller (These camshafts are usually made from steel not iron like a flat tappet) thats why they are so expensive. Hope this helps!

Oh and I'm assuming you already know the block HAS to be set up for rollers, they have to have the hold down spider and often push rods are a different length (Shorter) but a roller block can use flat tappets as long as pushrod length is correct.
