I have a new yamaha 150 4stroke with 1 hour on it. I want to switch to synthetic oil and want
to know if the proper time is at the first service.(10 hours) Also if using a synthetic would it still
be necessary to use ring free in the fuel? ;) :)

Re: switching to synthetic oil

Personally, I would ring up the dealer and get his advice. After all, if something happens, he's the one ya got to deal with. Barring that, I would at least wait till it's broke in and then switch. There's so many different debates on synthetic oil here, that I would have to defer to the dealers advice for your particular motor..

I wouldn't switch before the end of break-in, Rivercat. Synthetics can slow down the seating of rings and bearings.

I switched my Suzuki DF70 to Mobil 1 after 20 hours.

Good luck. :)

Like JB says your motor may not seat the rings. As a reference: Kohler voids the warranty on their small water cooled 4 stroke commercial engines for that reason. The rings don't seat, a glaze happens and compression never developes. It happens quickly. The only way to remedy this is to take the motor down and hone. Best bet is to contact your motor dealer and ask.

I have been told from a number of salesman and mechanics that the synthetics will help prevent wear and offer higher temprature protection.

Re: switching to synthetic oil

Your new Yamaha F150 makes no recommendation, either during break-in or normal use, for using synthetic or non-synthetic motor oils. They only specify an API certified SE, SF, SG, SH, or SJ grade 10W-30 or 10W-40.

This outboard does not require synthetic oil, or ring-free in the fuel. But you could certainly use them, at any time if you feel they would benefit you. However, I would recommend following the change interval regardless of the type of oil used.

I get exceptional performance and longevity in my Yamaha 4-strokes using quality conventional motor oils. ;)
