Everytime I go out for yellowfin the capt says that there are swords down there too. Any pointers on how to fish for them. None of the dummies ( including the biggest dummie, me) I fish with know how.

bait, jig, lights rigs? I'm a blank canvas here.

Re: Swordfish?

I caught 3 in the last couple years while out on overnight tuna trips the NE canyons.

Medium squid on a 10' 200lb leader, 6" green light stick attached to main line approx 12' from bait.
I like at least 300' of water and set the bait at 200'.

Re: Swordfish?

My uncle just caught a pretty nice one trolling back from Catalina to Santa Barbara.

You can see the squid they were using in one of these pics. They were just towing this thing through the water a couple hundred yards behind the boat . . . no diver, no weight, just that shiny metal headed squid.

Re: Swordfish?

Like sunburnt said, striped marlin. I used to fish them a lot off Catalina. Most of the time you would pick up a bonita shark or better yet a threasher. Also a lot of fun was jigging a kelp patty for spanish makrel and drifting them for broadbill or threashers.
