Sx-a trim ram rebuild

What’s the trick on pushing the brass piece down far enough to remove the c-clip on the trim ram? Seems like it will be damaged super easy.

I just started attempting to rebuild my SX-A rams also. I got the retaining ring out, but I’m unable to get the ram out of the cylinder. I can get the brass ring about 75% out but that’s it. It feels like it’s metal on metal when I try to muscle it out. I found a YouTube video where the guy uses a slide hammer. Is this the only way to remove the ram/brass ring from the cylinder? I just wanted to double check before resorting to brute force. Thanks!
