SX drive gear slippage

I have 99 SX drive. I replaced all gaskets in the lower and upper drive. Now it is all back together. My question is when I put it in forward gear, it will free spin in one direction but not in the other. If I put it in reverse, it will free spin in the opposite direction (visa verse) but not in the reverse. I don't remember it doing this prior to my dis-assembly. Now I know there are special tools needed for a complete tear-down but I only removed enough to get to the gaskets.

Is this right or did I not put something back correctly? I do have a shop manual and followed all instruction to re-assemble.

If this should not happen, could it be with the shifting mechanism?

Thanks.

Works just like it's supposed to.

It sounds like everything is working correctly. If it is the prop that is moving in reverse instead of forward then you have the pin on the wrong side of the upper gear case shifter. So instead it might need to be on the left side instead of the right side... Not to sure if this is what you are talking about.
