i have a 2006 glastron gx185 with an sx outdrive. i was changing the drive oil and i stripped the oil level dipstick screw on the very top of the outdrive(dumb!!! i know, i know). it appears that this is pretty common and the fix is either to replace the top cap, or have a helicoil installed, both of which i am not comfortable doing myself. now for BIG problem. i have a boating trip planned in 2 days and the boat dealerships cant fit me in. my question is can i just put the dipstick screw in and put some sort of waterproof sealant on it for a temp fix. my vacation is already paid for so canceling is really not an option.

thanks in advance

Re: sx outdrive help

Mine is stripped too. Replacing the top cover, according to the service manual, is pretty straightforward but I doubt you can get the part in 2 days. Are any of your threads still remaining? About half my threads are still there, and it screws in still. The o-ring does a fine job sealing the hole for me (no water is lube). I just check it before and after every trip and will replace the cover this winter. I don't see why a good solid sealant wouldn't work as a temporary fix just for your vacation, then get the cover replaced when you get back. Happy vacation!
