Re: sx195 propping

I have the same set up. VP outdrive with a 1.60 ratio. The stock prop is an aluminum 14.25X19. WOT RPM is somewhere in the 5200-5600 range. Top speed is around 53-54mph (speedo not GPS). Can I go to a 21 pitch and not lose top end speed? I'm worried it will lower the WOT RPM too much and I won't achieve max power. Obviously a new one would be stainless. Thoughts?

Thanks.

If you're really showing that much RPM on the Tach and not cavitating, then you need to ensure that the switch on the back of your tach is set for v-8 and not a v-6. Going to a 21 will lower your top RPM and give 1-2mph on the top end. You will notice a bit less holeshot if the boat is loaded or if pulling a tube or a slolem skier. I have a 205GX with the 5.0 GL. I run a 19 pitch for skiing (4800 rpm full throttle) and a 21 pitch to cruise (4500 rpm full throttle) My top speed on both is between 50-53 mph depending on load and water conditions. I got 56 mph out of it on a 53 degree day, just me in the boat, no gear, and almost no gas with the 21 prop on it. I can usually get 50 with a full load of stuff / folks / and gas.

Re: sx195 propping

Wow, my bad, the comment about my RPMs was waaay off, WOT RPM is between the recommended range of 4400-4800 using a 21 pitch aluminum prop (not 19 as i had originally wrote - apparently a long winter allows you to forget what equipment you're running). That said, can i go to a 22 pitch or 23 to add some top end? It doesn't look like 22 pitches are that easy to find, maybe they don't make them for this application? At what RPM does a VP 5.0 GL make its max horsepower? Anyone ever seen a dyno chart for one of these motors?

Also, I recently installed a captains call side pipe diverter system and with it open the engine breathes a little better and squeakes out a slightly higher RPM (closer to the upper range specified above).

Again, my biggest fear is dropping $300+ on a stainless prop that makes my boat go slower. How terrible would that be!!!??

Thanks for the comments.
