yes,the damper is the two solid spacers with a wave washer between then, then the nylon coller then the metal retainer. most techs never read the service manual and its not taught in the drive school for some reason.
the correct assy requires a spacer,wave washer,spacer coller then the metal retainer, however the step most often missed is to PULL UP on the shaft when seating the retainer.
if its not done correctly the shaft tends to bounce up and down at idle speeds in gear.
that bounce is stopped in the upward direction by the shaft thrust bearing. it makes a knocking sound.
a 3.1 especially with a big stainless wheel will usually rattle on a fusher out of the water when in gear. it should not in the water with a load.
put if the shaft is not pulled upwards before seating the retainer the retainer is useless.
