SX250 rattle

I had a local Yamaha dealer change the pump impeller recently and since there is a "rattle" coming from the l.u. in forward and reverse only at idle RPM. The service manager says it is because of the s.s. wheel. I don't recall hearing it previously with the same wheel. Any thoughts?
Thanks.

I am unable to locate the drive shaft dampner in the parts breakdown. Is the wave washer the same? Your info on this forum has been the only thing that has kept my engine going. Your help/comments have been invaluable. The Yamaha shops in Minn leave a lot to be desired when it comes to maintenance.

Re: SX250 rattle

yes,the damper is the two solid spacers with a wave washer between then, then the nylon coller then the metal retainer. most techs never read the service manual and its not taught in the drive school for some reason.
the correct assy requires a spacer, wave washer, spacer coller then the metal retainer, however the step most often missed is to PULL UP on the shaft when seating the retainer.
if its not done correctly the shaft tends to bounce up and down at idle speeds in gear.
that bounce is stopped in the upward direction by the shaft thrust bearing. it makes a knocking sound.
a 3.1 especially with a big stainless wheel will usually rattle on a fusher out of the water when in gear. it should not in the water with a load.
put if the shaft is not pulled upwards before seating the retainer the retainer is useless.
