Synthetic trim fluid?

I think I want to try some synthetic oil in the trim for my inline 6 this year. (mods please don't move this, trim systems are all pretty much the same between brands) First, does anyone think it would be a bad idea to switch to synthetic in a 30 year old trim system? Second, I've heard of using both 30 weight motor oil and Dextron III ATF in the trim system...which would be better?

there's a dude around here that knows a thing or two about oils and I am certainly not he...but given the three choices you mention, I would use the ATF...that's what I used on my 25 year old 'rude a couple of years ago with no ill effects...just a Thought

My 92 Johnson calls for power steering fluid and not to use motor oils or transmission fluid. I changed it to the Valvoline synthetic last year and it works fine. No problems at all with the hydraulic system, just the electric motor crapped out from worn out brushes.
