I got my ebay special NOS System check Tach. Straight out of hte package it's at 600RPM. Is this normal or is there something wrong with it? It seems odd to me it would be at anything other than 0 when it isn't even hooked up to anything. Also, I need a plug for it. The 8 pin plug must include the TACH connections because other than that, there is only a place to wire the light. I need a plug and a pin out. Where do I get that? Part number?

Re: System Check Tach

Here's another question. The tach says on a sticker "For use on 5 - 6 pul/rev alternator equipped outboards. I'm not sure what exactly that means and I'm also not sure I have an alternator equipped outboard. HELP

Also not sure this is in the right forum. Perhaps it should be moved?

Nope....it is OK. On power-up, it will zero out.
The plug is a different story. You will either have to get a used '96-up boat harness, cut the plug off, and splice, OR you will have to buy the Deutsch connectors with crimp on pins and make up the plug to your wires. The 8 pin plug you are looking at has purple (+12v), and black wires, a horn driver wire, a grey tach wire, and maybe 4 or so tan wires from engine sensors wired into it in a normal harness. It will not "Systems Check" anything for you without the tans connected.

If you specifically want me to, I will go to the shop and get the pinout and colors for you from a harness I have.

The setting is for 6 pole, and you DO have an alternator....the stator and flywheel are the engine's alternator.

Re: System Check Tach

The thumbnail shows the pin positions fro the 8 pin SystemCheck tachometers. There are several different harnesses, depending on the main control harness in use; the four pin one shown is just one of those available.

Re: System Check Tach

This is great, thanks. I've been reading for about 8 hours. I haven't seen anything this detailed. I plan to buy the modern controls and the modern harness and somehow adapt at the engine to the red plug, but also take advantage of the system check. I just don't know if I should buy the system check conversion kit (not sure what it includes) or JUST the oil tank sending unit. If the system check harness replaces the normal control harness from the engine to the controls and gauges, then perhaps that is the best deal. It's only about $100 more than a normal harness would cost. If I have to buy the normal harness AND the conversion kit, I think I may just get the oil sending unit and do the rest of the conversion on my own. There are lots of wiring diagrams out there, but I have yet to find anything that shows the wiring from an OLD engine to NEWER controls WITH system check.

I have sourced the 8 socket plug, but I think I'm better off with the new harness that goes with the new controls. What do you think? That would get the needed tan wires at least as far as the engine compartment, then it's just a matter of converting to the RED plug the wires that are normally there, and using some other plugs to connect the NEW wires.

Re: System Check Tach

Do you have the sensors for the 4 system checks? They are overheat, low oil, no oil and check engine(fuel restriction).

I think motors of your era didn't have the no oil indicator or the vacuum switch. If the OMS pump is 3 wire it doesn't have the no oil sensor.

If it were me and I could source the 8 pin DIP plug, I would splice it into my current harness.

The 8 pin to 8 pin harness is part # 0176717. It will have all of the wires.

The 140 does not have a vacuum switch for the fuel obstruction alarm, but should have the VRO alarms if you have the four wire harness on the fuel pump.

Re: System Check Tach

The current harness is being replaced no matter what. The controls are falling apart in my hands. The wire in the engine compartment is cracked and falling apart. I already replaced the engine harness thinking I was buying the entire harness from engine to controls. The details on these parts is slim to none.

SO I guess the question would be which harness to BUY. The sensors I have are temp, VRO, and def will ave the oil tank sensor, but I am not sure I have the correct one now. I'll have to check. The VRO is 4 wire, not the original it seems. Can I simply add the Fuel sensor? Where do it go? ;)

Re: System Check Tach

The vacuum switch for the fuel obstruction alarm is cut into the gasoline line before the fuel pump and needs a connection to the warning system on the engine harness. This is not a cheap part.

The nature of the the conversion from pre-1996 to post 1996 wiring systems needs an analysis of your setup and would be more likely to be satisfactory if you were advised by someone in your area. You have to consider all of your existing setup, not just the engine.

I see. But I am replacing the entire existing setup. In fact every piece of copper in that boat is getting ripped out as well as 100% of the gauges. Or, I could be missing your point. Thanks for the advice.
