Howdy folks. I just recieved some info that I have been researching for quite a while and thought I would share it with you guys. I have been trying to find out if I can increase the HP in my T-50 by exchanging the emmission control module. As it turns out, a T-50 and a T-60 are identical outboards, the only difference being the ECM. If you have a T-50 and put an ECM designed for a T-60 in it, your motor will now perform as a 60hp with no ill effects. The change out is simple to perform and takes less than 5 minutes to do. No other changes or adjustments are needed after the swap, other than possible prop changes due to the increase in HP. My prop currently is a 13 5/8 x 13 and I might have to play around a little to find the perfect pitch. The price I was quoted was $525.00, which to me is cheap for an extra 10hp. FYI.
P.S. I was told the same is true for the F series motors also ( 50hp to 60hp ).

Re: T-50 info

I'll do some research on this, but I'd think that there would have to be something different in air delivery as well. You can't change fuel delivery without changing air delivery and vice-versa.

My main reason for posting is to strongly urge anybody taking steps to change horsepower to do so honestly. Always represent the horsepower appropriatey! Never change horsepower to cheat stated maximums. Doing so can land you in big legal trouble, or get someone hurt. If the motor is under warranty, consider it revoked.

Re: T-50 info

I followed up on my research of this subject and concluded that it is true, so if your not concerned about what an "Admiral" on a web site forum thinks than you might find this info useful.

Gadzooks! I've been besmirched. :%

I did a bit of research and came to the conclusion that it is almost true. I looked at the Yamaha website parts diagrams and there is indeed a difference in the air delivery. There would have to be. Even a computer can't change the laws of Physics. The 50 has one additional part and one different part. So to do it right, remove the extra part, install the different part, replace the computer, and re-decal the hood. Then remove it from the max 50 boat and hang it on one that'll legally hold it. ;)
