What purpose do the check balls in the hoses to the risers serve?

I believe the theory is when the therm is closed the water has to go somewhere . The ball are forced open to allow water to exit the elbows because the manifold is not flowing water yet. Once the therm opens the balls shut and water flows normally thru the manifold and then out the elbow

Ayuh,...... If yer coolin' system is designed for the check-balls, 'n you take 'em out,......

You'll get over-heatin' issues at idle/ trollin' speeds,.....
