My 1997 Johnson 225 Venom has not been run for about a year and a half (I just bought it). I'm told that I should replace the water pump, clean the carbs, put in new fuel (with a little oil in it as the engine still only has about 30 hrs. on a rebuild), and service/replace the t-stas. What are the t-stats?? Is there anything else I should do prior to use??

Thanks
Bob

They are the thermostats.
Run the engine.
If it is running around 150 degrees, the thermostats are ok.

My 95' 200 runs between 150-155.
Some models run at 165.

When my thermostats went out, it ran below 120.

I would say that if you are between 150 and 165, your thermostats are working.

Hi Guys,

I'm new here and hope I'm not missing something.I've always considered 163 degrees to be the start of the deathzone.Have newer motors changed?
DHP

I don't know about other places, but here in California, water doesn't boil until it gets to 212 degrees.

My car runs at 190 degrees. My motorcycle runs at 185 degrees.

If your motor runs too cold, it will carbon up, idle terribly, and your gas mileage will be poor.

I don't have a temperature gauge on my boat - only a water pressure gauge which I know must not go below 15 lbs. I didn't know it was common to have a temperature gauge on an outboard. Do you guys have them? If so, where would I get one?
