Hallo, first time on this forum.

Excuse my English ;-) Last year when taking up the boat for the winter the tilt/trim didn't work.

Seems to be a black box ahead of the flywheel. It clicks both "up" and "down".

To get the boat up I tapped the oil form the starboard (styrbord in swedish ;-)"relief" plug.

It is a 3 wire motor and I have tried to get it running by connecting directly to battery. No sound.

Don't remember exactly from last autumn (boat on island in archipelago) but I think I tried a multimeter resistance test and no current running.

I don't have to use the T/T but nice if it works.

Question: Is it worth trying to open the motor and is it possible to fix it?? An old island Jack Tar told me the motor cylinders use to corrode through (from outside I guess) the metal. But I can't find any major corrosion.

It is attached with 3 bolts or rather screws with a quite tiny notch/slot. Two are easily accessible, whilst the third is "squeezed" between the motor covering and the transom/bracket.

Any advise is appreciated!!

Welcome Swedish!

Just a little backtrack here....it's a little unusual for a TNT unit with relays to use a three wire motor. The motor used with the relay box is usually a two wire motor. Could you give us a model number? That way we can zero in on the year.

Any other info on the engines history would help also.

When you test the motor, remember the black wire is always ground. You can jump either the blue or green wire separatly to see if the motor will run in either direction. Blue is up and green is down.

Thanks OBJ for the input. I haven't "been out to" the island during all the winter so I will post more later but I'm 95,3% sure ;-) there was one coarser and two tinier wires or maybe two coarse and one ...

The black box contained two (one?) black big "sugar cubes"

This other solenoid alternative, how would that look like??

The two cubes in the box look very much like this:

http://www.iboats.com/mall/partfind...&gd_poid=111781&gd_row=34&**********=15974439

It does NOT look like the solenoid here:

http://www.iboats.com/mall/partfind...&gd_poid=111834&gd_row=33&**********=15974439

I have looked at Evinrude Parts Search Page and i'm pretty sure it is the POWER TRIM/TILT 1984-->POWER TRIM/TILT 65 THRU V-6 or POWER TRIM/TILT 1986-->POWER TRIM/TILT 60 THRU 110

The hydralic parts have nr 0391037 and all the kit 0173827. The only difference between -84 and -86 seems to be some hydralic details and the shape of the relay box and fuses etc.

What I called 3 wires might be what they call the Sending Unit which have 2 wires and the Lead&Fuse wire. maybe just 2 o fthese three go into the motor !!!

I red in an old forum from 2001 which might have preceded this that some guy had found a similar scenario as i have depending on broken spirngs/brushes. Could that be the case?

Thanx again! (the ice has finally started to melt and time to go out there. The water in the Baltic Sea is brackish)

------------
Here is the spring and brush guy:

begideon
2001-07-20

Can you here the DC motor trying to drive the pump? If not, it sounds like the springs behind the brushes in the motor weren't making good contact with the armature. I have had the same problem before.

Good Luck.

--------
http://www.outboardrepairs.com/topics/001741.html
