T/T Solenoid, Which one? Grounded base or Isolated Base?

What kind of solenoid should I be looking for? Grounded or isolated base? I have found at least 4 different OMC P/N's for solenoids that all look the same.

I have seen posts that steer people away from the auto parts store "Ford" solenoid.

Just need a little direction on what would work best for a tim/tilt solenoid.

The T/T is pushing a 90HP Evinrude. I dont have info on the specific T/T motor.

Here is a link to a site selling some solenoids. The bottom left hand four are the same looking ones that I am replacing.

Thanks alot!!

The 1987 90hp Evinrude/Johnson does not incorporate a PTT solenoid. It has a dual relay system.

That hyperlink doesn't appear to be functioning at the moment.

As Joe said, in stock form, the 87 used dual relays part #0582472, superseeded to 0584416,0586147,0586224.

If you have a solenoid setup, it has been retrofitted. Is it a single solenoid with 3 wires coming off of the trim motor? What colour wiring is involved?

BTW, what has led you to believe that the solenoid in question is shot?

Yes. This boat has been changed up with a single solenoid set up that controls the (blue) up wire. The other two wires are green and black. Green has been hard wired to the t/t switch on the controls.

Im not certain why the former owner has done this but rebuilding the current solenoid set up is the easiest at this point.

I have just bought an OMC solenoid P/N 581528

I should be able to get it in tomorrow some time.

Apparently this is a "grounded base" solenoid which simply means the base will be grounded when screwed in.

When I have the time I plan on building a second solenoid box for the down (green) just to keep the load off that t/t switch.

It's all working now. The culprit was the solenoid. We used a similar looking one from the Autozone that would have been used in a Ford of some model.

With the correct solenoid from OMC it works fine.

Thanks so much for all the help Chris. I'm sure this thread will come in handy for someone else one day.

THANKS!
