Hi everyone

I have a Maxum 2100SC , with a mercruiser 4.3l 220 HP MPI
my family configuration is 5, 2 adults , 2 childs , 1 baby
i live in Argentina and my tipical use is boating on weekends in a delta of fresh whater , in this place have many boats on weekends , and a big wakes every time, so you need to acelerate and stop very offen
my boat start to plane @ 3000 RPM, and my flow metter show 30 Liter per hour, i need to reduce this RPM to start plane more fast and with less consumption.
My question is what work best for my boat , 1) Hydrofoils 2) Smart Tabs , or 3) Bennett's?

In any case please tell me the model of the tabs are best for my boat

thanks in advance , and sorry about my english

Re: Tabs for a Maxum 2100SC

From what I have read here the smart tabs are great. They help with quicker planing, staying on plane at lower power and low speed handling.
Trimming all the way in will help planing and staying on plane etc. I had good luck with the "Doelfin" hydrofoil on an 18 ft. Cobia 120 hp.I/O.Planed quicker, stayed on plane easier, didn't bounce around as much and the bow stayed down better. They say they rob a little top end speed but is hard to tell without a speedometer.

Here is how I rank them:

1) Adjustable tabs (like Bennett's). If you like to control what happens with the boat, I cannot emphasize enough how cool adjustable tabs are.

2) SmartTabs. If you prefer a more passive approach and they are cheaper than adjustables.

3) Hydrofoil. These may work on some applications, but in general you will not save fuel by putting more stuff in the agua . . . If that same stuff gets more boat out of the water, maybe, but if they saved fuel AND helped speed, then they would be an option from all of the OB and I/O manufacturers. They don't give up revenue when they see an opportunity ;)

My .02

I'll agree except that I would give a lower rating to the hydrofoil. If it does manage to rsise the stern of the boat it will reduce stability. With either type of tabs, the stern is raised at both sides. With a hydrofoil it's raised in the center.

Both tab manufacturers mentioned have websites that will help you determine the appropriate model for your boat.

Re: Tabs for a Maxum 2100SC

Thanks for the replies

i think the bennett's are the best option for me, since down here don't have a lenco distributor , have no more option than the bennett's in this range

i'm afraid about install the smart tabs because i don't know the behaviour of the boat if i need to rise the bow facing a big wake ,avoiding the spray or a bucket of water in my wife face

but i still thinking about the hydrofoil's , i had a bowrider 17 ft with a mercury 90 OB , and works like charm, but now, i have a different fish ;)

thankx again

Smart Tabs will allow you to trim the bow up, I run in the sound and it can get rough, 2 to 4 foot chop, I can trim up, slow down and stay on a plane where with my old boat and hydrofoil I had to bog the boat in the water to get the bow high enough to keep from digging in the water. Smart Tabs are great with great support. You should contact John at Nauticus and discuss with him your boat and Smart Tabs.

http://www.nauticusinc.com

Icepick;

The trim on your motor will raise or lower the bow as you may need and the Smart Tabs will not hurt this adjustment. Use the ST1290-60 not the ST1290-80. If you are considering a prop change as well I strongly suggest that you install the tabs first then choose the correct prop. Smart Tabs when properly adjusted will add 2 to 4 MPH to the top speed as well as 100 to 150 RPMS.

A hydrofoil will help you a "little" in getting on plane but from there on it is a crap shoot. Your likely to introduce new handling issues.

Icepick, Adjustable trim tabs are the best. Pick ones that are larger than standard, and they will give greater lift and allow planing at a lower speed. Make sure you have enough space on the transom to install these larger tabs.

I do not know if they will reduce fuel consumption all that much, but you will be able to stay on plane at a slower speed and pull tubes slower. Planing at a slower speed is real handy if the water is rough, since you get a better ride.

Re: Tabs for a Maxum 2100SC

I am with Chris1956. If budget and the fact that you need to "monitor" your tabs doesn't scare you off, this is the way to go. More potential combinations of trim and tabs with adjustables.

I have run my boats with the tabs full down and trim all of the way out, and I have run with the tabs all of the way up and the trim all of the way down. Depending on wind and swell direction I do a lot of side to side adjustments as well. I will never own a v-hull boat without adjustable tabs again.

I have a friend who does not like to play with any adjustments or switches or anything. In fact I am not sure why his boat has gages  He likes to simply turn the key and go. We are installing SmartTabs on his boat and they are perfect for a guy like him ;)

I will John. I am very curious. You have won me over as I was very sceptical at first. His boat propoises at top speed and he has trouble maintaining wakeboard speeds, so again, I think it will be a nice application.

I don't mean to ever sound like I am slamming your great product. The ability to adjust for, or actually add, list is a biggie to me . . .

Re: Tabs for a Maxum 2100SC

QC;

I respect your choice of helm controlled tabs. It is a user and application desision. When I had my larger boat I used Bennett and Smart Tabs on my tender. We now have a 22 SeaRay with Smart Tabs. It is a lake boat. My cousin has a 24' with Bennett (came with the boat). Although he does not use them correctly in my opinion, there is no need to change them over. he is satified with what he has. I hardly ever see the hard headed nut case now but ....

Just kidding! We Fish together a lot.

Have a good year.

Nlain : is better to keep our chat in one forum :)

John : Thanks for suggest your product.
but in this size 22 many ppl recomend an adjustable tabs, and if i try first the smart tabs and did't work fine in my boat , the reseller can't change for adjustables , and i'm afraid to waste a lot of $$ in this shot

thanks all of you for the replies again.

and my final word is, adjustable tabs for my boat.

Thanks again
