Three prong plug on MerControl is made to power tach. Choose an aftermarket tach for a merc/mariner OB, and you should be fine. The early Mercs (likely older than yours), used the switchbox to power the original merc tachs. Check the brown wire (old mercs) or the grey wire (80 and newer Mercs) to see that it is connected to one of the yellow wires at the rectifier. if so, you are ready to go. if not, move it from the switchbox to the rectifier. I would ask a Merc dealer for the molded connector for the tach.
