Have a '91 200 XP Evinrude, I had problems at the start of the year (April) with the tach jumping to 7000 then going dead then back to correct reading and the volt meter peged at the top of the gauge. I took it in to have a regular carb cleaning and told them about the tach and volt meter problems and they ended up replacing the tach..... now the tach will sometimes work then sometimes not. It now also seems that the charging system is no longer working. I just got my boat back after they had it for 5 weeks trying to get it to idle properly and adjusting the timing they kept saying that they would adjust it then take it and run it and it would be out of adjustment.

I metered the tach lead from the recifier/regulator terminal block today and one time when i turned on the key i got voltage the next time i didn't then again later it seemed ok.

Am I just looking at the recifier/regulator or that along with a new strator?

Thanks for your help.

You have an intermittant short in your wires. You need to hunt down that electrical gremlin and fix it.

Marine wires corrode inside the insulation sometimes up to a foot away from the connectors. Check your wires and repair with solder and heat shrink wrap.

Bob

No shorts...the recifier/regulator is giving me bad readings at its terminal block. This is a indication that the recifier/regulator is bad. The question is the stator also bad.
